Fish Habitat

The seafloor off the Alaska coast covers a wide range of habitats, from relatively featureless sand and mud to more complex rocky areas.

corals in the aleutiansFishes that live in these habitats are not only important to the economy of Alaska, but also are a vital resource to other species that rely on them for food.

Lack of basic information on the distribution and habitat use of most early life stages of fishes can constrain effective fisheries management. NPRB funds research that examines fishing and other human-related impacts on habitat, habitat mapping, and ecosystem functions of habitat.

Fish Habitat research topics are consistent with those outlined in the NPRB Science Plan.
