Sailing Through Coastal Metadata
Metadata Bob (shown at right) is here to help you navigate through the sometimes confusing world of creating metadata records. The NOAA publication Sailing Through Coastal Metadata is a great information resource.
Presentations and Tools from the 2006 Alaska Marine Science Symposium Metadata Workshop
- bio.cfg - A configuration file used by MP (or MP Batch) to validate against the Biological Data Profile.
- bio_smms.cfg - A configuration file used by MP (or MP Batch) to use with the Biological Data Profile. Designed to omit all of the SMMS specific tags that appear when a record is exported from SMMS version 5.1. For more information on configuration files, please see http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/tools/doc/config.html
- cns.exe - the CNS (chew-n-spit) program, most current version as of 6/10/05
- fgdc.cfg - MP configuration file enforcing only the core FGDC standards.
- Instructions for running MP in DOS.doc - Word document describing how to run MP in DOS
- Metadata Validation.doc - Word document describing how to use the MP Batch utility to run MP (no DOS required!)
- mp.exe - the MP (Metadata Parser) program, current as of 6/10/05. This software is updated frequently and can be obtained at the following URL: http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/
- MPBAT.ini - Initialization file used by MP Batch to locate input/output folders and the MP program.
- MPbatch.zip - Zip file containing the installation package for MP Batch. Available from Intergraph at http://imgssupport.intergraph.com/Tools.asp?Product=smms
- smms.ext - Extension file used by MP & bio_smms.cfg to ignore the SMMS tags created when exporting from SMMS version 5.1
This folder contains a couple of sample metadata records, including one for a non biological GIS data set and another for a non-GIS biological data set:
- This folder contains all of the files needed to run TKME. These files can also be found in the USGS folder, inside of the 'all_win.exe' self extracting file. The 'snippets' folder contains the snippets for all of the UTM zones, as well as snippets for the NAD27 and NAD83 datums. See following URL for more information on snippets. http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/tools/doc/tkme.html
- all_win.exe - This self-extracting zip file contains all the files for the free metadata tools published by the USGS. These tools include CNS, MP, and TKME. The source code, written in C, is also included in this zip file. All files current as of 01/18/06. See http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/ for descriptions of the additional tools included.
