2002 Request for Proposals

  • Released: March 8, 2002
  • Amount: $1.5 million in Environmental Improvement and Restoration Funds and funds from the North Pacific Marine Research Institute (NPMRI).
  • Priorities: Eight categories of research priorities were identified in the RFP based on criteria in the enabling legislation, priorities identified in the interagency Bering Sea Research Plan of September 1998, and other pressing fishery management needs identified by the Board.

Proposal Receipt and Review

  • Received: 41
  • Amount: nearly $6.3 million by April 12, 2002; proposals responded to all categories except reduction in fishing capacity
  • Evaluations: Technical evaluations occurred in early 2005; 264 reviews were obtained.  The Science Panel met in Anchorage on March 2-4 to review proposals and evaluations, and presented funding recommendations to the Board at its meeting on March 15-17.
  • Funded: $1.643 million, with $434,000 provided from NPMRI funds and $1.21 million from EIRF funds, for 15 research projects.

The US Secretary of Commerce approved the Board’s recommendations on June 20, 2002. Earlier, in March 2002, the Board approved continuation of five North Pacific Marine Research Program projects for $571,000 using NPMRI funds. Therefore, the Board funded just over $2.2 million in research beginning in 2002.
