2003 Request for Proposals

  • Released: November 8, 2002
  • Amount: Up to $14 million in Environmental Improvement and Restoration Funds
  • Priorities: Marine ecosystem structure and processes; endangered and stressed species; fish habitat; fishery management and economics; bycatch; stock assessment and recruitment processes; and contaminants.

Proposal Receipt and Review

  • Received: 156
  • Amount: $70 million by January 10, 2003
  • Evaluations: Technical evaluations occurred in early 2003; 441 reviews were obtained. The newly formed Science Panel met in Seattle on March 3-4 to review proposals and evaluations, and then presented its funding recommendations to the Board at its meeting on March 18-20.
  • Funded: The Board approved 30 research projects. A reduced amount of $7 million was made available for new research due to interest earnings from the EIRF that were lower than expected.

The Board's recommendations for 2003 were approved by the Secretary of Commerce acting through his designee, the Alaska Regional Administrator for NOAA Fisheries.
