Gulf of Alaska IERP

Planning Team

A planning team of academic and agency scientists, and resource managers The team met in May 2006 to begin developing an implementation plan for this program.

They have made several recommendations regarding the vision, mission and goals of the Gulf of Alaska IERP to ensure that the program receives research proposals that meet the intent of the program. Team members include:

  • Pete Peterson (Chair) | University of North Carolina
  • Diana Stram | North Pacific Fishery Management Council
  • Anne Hollowed | Alaska Fisheries Science Center
  • Beth Turner | NOAA (GLOBEC)
  • Doug Woodby | Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game
  • Frank Whitney | Dept. of Fisheries and Ocean, Canada
  • Kate Wynne | Alaska Sea Grant
  • Phil Mundy | NOAA Auke Bay Lab
  • Ricardo Letelier | Oregon State University
  • Tom Royer | Old Dominion University

Implementation Plan Overview

The NPRB will solicit proposals for Integrated Ecosystem Research projects of up to six years in duration. It is anticipated that only one IERP project will be funded. The successful IERP proposal must be

  • multi-disciplinary
  • multi-institutional (i.e. at least one academic and one governmental entity)
  • integrated through the ecosystem to include atmospheric and ocean physics, primary and secondary production, forage species, and at least one of the focal issues identified by the NPRB.

Considering the long history of data collection in the Gulf of Alaska, a quantitative synthesis and re-analysis of existing data, as well as model parameterization, during the first two years of the effort is encouraged to maximize the value of any additional field components.
