Annual Photo Contest

Photography and science are inherently linked. Physics, chemistry, and mathematics have all played significant roles in photography. What a photograph means, however, is less of a science and more artistic expression. Photographs help tell stories, preserve memories, and evoke emotion.
Now in its 16th year, NPRB has conducted an annual photo contest for amateur and professional photographers. Awards are given to those who best depict images of sea life, coastal scenes, and marine research within U.S. waters of the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean. From tiny plankton to some of Earth's largest creatures, NPRB has seen it all with the annual photo contest. As NPRB develops program and educational materials, these images are used to help tell the stories of research, understanding, and life along coastal Alaska.
Who Can Enter
The contest is open to photographers of all skill levels who are residents of the United States, except employees of NPRB or their families, members of the NPRB Board of Directors and their immediate families, and members of NPRB Science Panel or Advisory Panel. Non-US residents are welcome to participate in the contest but will not be eligible for a cash prize. Both professionals and amateurs are encouraged to submit. The contest includes two categories: an Adult Category (18 and older) and a Youth Category (under 18).
Requirements
Images that are submitted to the contest must depict sea life, seascapes, coastal scenes, and/or marine research within the waters of the North Pacific Ocean including the Arctic Ocean, Bering Sea, and Gulf of Alaska. Up to five images may be submitted for the contest per entrant.
Entries may be submitted online or snail mail. Those submitting via mail must complete the given year's Entry Form.
Deadlines
Entry deadline is Monday, March 19, 2021. Entrants may be asked to submit a short paragraph about the story behind the photo any time after March 19, 2021. Winners will be announced on or before Friday, June 4, 2021. NPRB reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.
